With writers and actors on strike, TV ad impressions rose 1.4% in the third quarter, while ad spending dropped by about 6%, according to new data from measurement and analytics company iSpot.tv.

Even without the benefit of Thanksgiving games, the NFL still claimed 12.25% of TV ad impressions from November 28-December 4. When combined with Friday and Saturday’s college games, American football accounted for nearly 21% of TV ad impressions for the week.

Fox Corp. and Vizio said they signed a multi-year expansion of their distribution agreement that will bring Vizio SmartCast users access to the Fox Sports app and Fox Weather. Notably, Celebrity Jeopardy! scores the week’s highest iSpot Attention Index (112), meaning viewers were on average highly likely to watch its promos all the way through (vs. interrupting viewing by changing the channel, pulling up the guide, fast-forwarding or turning off the TV).

But that doesn’t mean the “salvation of polar bears,” explains Steven Amstrup, chief scientist at the conservation organization Polar Bears International and former director for 30 years of Alaskan polar bear research at the United States Geological Survey.

Amstrup hopes the research “will encourage scientists and managers to do some surveys of where else in the Arctic” glaciers could help polar bears hold on longer.
“If anything, this study really is another piece of evidence of the fundamental relationship between polar bears and ice-covered water,” he says. “Do they really care if that ice is fresh water or salt water? Probably not, as long as there are seals underneath it.”
