Vizio is bringing local TV channels to some of their users directly through their smart TV operating system. Vizio users in select cities will now have free access to their local Fox or Gray TV channels through Vizio's WatchFree Plus, an app on Vizio smart TVs, the company said Wednesday.

The Free This Week program is continuing to make new additions to its collection of diverse offerings. In May, Comcast offered free access to Apple TV+ content, and in June it gave users the opportunity to watch LGBTQ+-themed streamers like Revry at no cost to celebrate Pride month.

Because, as you may have heard me say several dozen times before, without the tens of billions of dollars generated by carriage and retrans fees, the industry is going to have to get used to a less fiscally carefree existence. Streaming can still be a very profitable business, but it will never be as wildly profitable as it was in the 90s, 00s and much of the 2010s.

Research firm TVRev estimates that FAST, combined with ad-supported streaming, known as AVOD, or advertising video on demand, could take in $43 billion of total domestic TV ad spending in 2027, topping the total for broadcast and cable ad markets combined.
